My research focuses on reducing health disparities among minority (especially Asian Americans) and immigrant populations living in Orange County, CA. My research projects are funded either by NIH or Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center.
My current projects include: (1) mixed-methods study to examine factors associated with Helicobacter Pylori and Stomach Cancer; and (2) a cohort study of examining stress and sleep disparities and cardiometabolic health. Both studies involve primary data collections of Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese Americans residing in Orange County and the studies will be community-based participatory research.
For the first study, we will interview gastroenterologists and leaders of community organizations to learn about practices of offering H. Pylori and stomach cancer screening and treatment to Asian patients. We will also conduct surveys and focus groups with people from Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese communities to learn about their knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to H. Pylori and Stomach cancer screening. Those who participate in this study will get firsthand experience of data collection and analysis. Students will be extensively trained in data collection protocols and data analysis. Students will interact with study participants, UCI staff, graduate students, and faculty.
For the second study, we will collect data by survey, objective sleep tracking devices, and biomarkers. Students will get firsthand experience of data collection interacting with human subjects. Specifically, experience will be garnered related to participant recruitment and screening, scheduling and conducting data collection (survey, sleep data, and biomarkers), and data entry and management. Students will interact with study participants, UCI staff, graduate students, and faculty.
Speaking Chinese, Korean, or Vietnamese language is preferred.
